Obituary, James Edward “Jim” Proper, Jr.

Millerton – James Edward “Jim” Proper, Jr., 90, a lifelong area resident died peacefully on Tuesday, July 9, 2019 at Vassar Brothers Medical Center in Poughkeepsie, NY. Jim worked as a dairy farmer for several area farms and most recently for Silamar Farm in Millerton, NY for nearly 20 years.

Born February 9, 1929 in Ancram, NY he was the son of the late James Edward and Annie (Cade) Proper, Sr. He attended local schools and served his country in the United States Army during the Korean War where he was wounded in combat and received The Purple Heart for injuries sustained in battle. He was honorably discharged in 1952. After his service in the Army, Jim returned to his love of farming having worked at the Poole Farm in Ancram, NY and Silamar Farm in Millerton just to name a few. He was a life member of the Millerton Legion Post #178 and a longtime member of the Millerton Gun Club. He was an avid hunter and cat lover in his spare time. His dear friends Lisa Van Tassell and Julie Schroeder wish to thank the compassionate and caring staff at Lutheran Care Center for their care of Jim in his final days.

There are no calling hours. Cremation will take place at Poughkeepsie Rural Cemetery in Poughkeepsie, NY. Burial will be private. Memorial contributions may be made to the Millerton Legion Post #178, 155 Route 44, Millerton, NY 12546.
