Poughquag Post Office Honors Old Glory

POUGHQUAG, NY – Postmaster William Kemble hosted a special celebration at the Poughquag Post Office in honor of Old Glory on Friday, June 14 – Flag Day. In addition to posting an oversized U.S. Flag, postal clerk Kevin Lynch made a 10ft x 3ft bright red banner that was hung on the railing alongside the Post Office entrance inviting residents to celebrate Flag Day. Upon entering the lobby, customers were able to enjoy light refreshments, free Priority Mail shipping supplies, grab some patriotic themed pencils, and take home a hand-held American Flag to show off their patriotism. .

Postmaster Kemble explains the Poughquag Post Office’s Flag Day celebration is designed to pay tribute to Old Glory, the nation, and our veterans who sacrificed so much on behalf of the freedoms we enjoy. As one of this nation’s largest employers of veterans, the Postal Service is especially mindful of the way the U.S. Flag is honored and treated at the more than 30,000 postal facilities across the country.

It is also important to remember that the U.S. Postal Service issue numerous stamps depicting the flag during the last six decades. These include stamps that show Old Glory flying over historic landmarks and being raised during historic and iconic moments like the Marines in WW II on Iwo Jima, 1969 moon landing, at Ground Zero, as well as many stamps that showcase the flag itself.

Postmaster Kemble adds the Postal Service is hiring Rural Carrier Associates throughout New York State. He encourages veterans to apply for the vacancies. Rural Carrier Associates sort, deliver, and collect mail using either a vehicle provided by the Postal Service or the employee’s own vehicle, for which he/she will be compensated. The employee provides customers on the route with a variety of services.
