Dutchess County Honors Those Who Gave All

Dutchess County Honors Those Who Gave All

Illuminate the Walkway Over the Hudson Memorial Day Eve
and Memorial Day Ceremony at the County’s War Memorial

Poughkeepsie… Dutchess County Marcus J. Molinaro and Marc Coviello, Director of the Dutchess County Division of Veterans’ Services, invite residents to participate in two special Memorial Day ceremonies to be held on Memorial Day Eve on the Walkway Over the Hudson and Memorial Day at the Dutchess County War Memorial in the Town of Poughkeepsie, as well as community events are planned throughout the weekend to mark the holiday.

On Sunday, May 26th at 7:30 p.m., the Walkway Over the Hudson continues the tradition of the sunset Memorial Day Eve ceremony and Illumination of the Walkway, which Dutchess County Division of Veterans Services began in 2012. County Executive Molinaro and Director Coviello will join leaders from Dutchess and Ulster counties for a moving sunset ceremony and vigil that will be held on the Walkway Over the Hudson State Historic Park in honor of those who gave their lives in defense of our great nation. The event will be held at the flagpole in the center of the Walkway and will feature a flag ceremony with the Pleasant Valley American Legion and Highland Veterans of Foreign Wars. A retired flag presentation will be performed, and members of Buglers Across America will play “Taps,” and the Hudson Valley Alumni Guard will be among the local groups taking part. Thousands of luminaries will light up the pedestrian span, with the Friends of the Walkway organization encouraging attendees to purchase luminaries to help add to this special Memorial Day event, proceeds of which will support Walkway Over the Hudson. Following the ceremony and vigil, the Walkway will remain open to attendees until 10:15 p.m.

On Memorial Day, Monday, May 27th, at 11 a.m., Dutchess County will host a tribute ceremony to the men and women of Dutchess County who lost their lives during military service at the Dutchess County War Memorial at the intersection of Raymond Avenue and Main Street in Poughkeepsie. Local Boy Scouts will participate in the tribute, as will County Executive Molinaro, and the guest speaker, Senator Sue Serino.

County Executive Molinaro said, “Generations of brave men and women have protected this great nation, far too many of whom made the supreme sacrifice in defense of our country. Dutchess County will never forget those courageous servicemembers who died to keep America safe, and we continue to honor their legacies – not just on Memorial Day, but every day. I encourage residents to attend one of Dutchess County’s Memorial Day weekend events and pay respect to those whose sacrifices have kept us free.”

Local municipalities throughout Dutchess County will also be hosting Memorial Day ceremonies to honor and remember those lost in service to our country. County Executive Molinaro and Director Coviello encourage Dutchess County residents to participate in one or more of the numerous Memorial Day events planned across the county.
