Dominique Altomari of Poughquag spends spring break volunteering in Waco, Texas

BEREA, OH (04/18/2019)– Dominique Altomari of Poughquag was among 44 Baldwin Wallace University students who dedicated their 2019 spring break to make a difference through the BW Alternative Break service program. The program facilitated diverse community engagement projects with student volunteers traveling to Chicago; Houston; Memphis, Tennessee; Waco, Texas; and Montgomery, Alabama. Each experience was led by a BW student with a university faculty or staff adviser providing support.

Altomari, a graduate of Arlington Senior High School majoring in sustainability, volunteered for the trip in Waco with the theme of “Food Insecurity and Sustainability: How Can We Make an Impact?” The students partnered with World Hunger Relief Inc. (WHRI), a farm dedicated to sustainable food production and providing low-income families in the area with nutritious, affordable meals. They participated in many educational activities aimed at understanding food insecurity, poverty and sustainability. The group experienced the life of an eco-friendly, sustainable farm and learned about the challenges of poverty. The trip was led by BW student Sarah Brown with support from staff adviser Autumn Parker.

Baldwin Wallace University, founded in 1845, was one of the first colleges to admit students without regard to race or gender. An independent, coeducational university of 4,000 students, BW offers coursework in the liberal arts tradition in more than 80 academic areas. Located in Berea, 12 miles from downtown Cleveland, BW offers students the cultural, educational and business advantages of a major metropolitan area.
