Hospital Bed Wranglers Needed for the PRC

The Pawling Resource Center is in need of volunteers who have a truck and are able to assist with the PRC’s hospital bed lending program. Many community members have benefitted from the loan of this equipment, however, sometimes the PRC is unable to facilitate the transfer of a bed in storage to a community member in need because there is no one with a truck, some muscle, and some free time to donate to this worthwhile program.
According to Sue Smith, the PRC’s Hospital Bed Program manager and Resource Center Trustee,
“Current state of hospital bed loan closets in Dutchess County…the PRC is pretty much it! The Poughkeepsie and Kingston loan of beds stopped a few years ago. An internet search brings up their loan closet phone number but they just give out our number. While we serve only the community of Pawling for food pantry and rides to medical appointments, the medical beds come from anywhere and go to anywhere they’re needed within a reasonable distance. Because the beds are stored in a facility that is accessible 24/7, beds can come in and go out at whatever time works for the transporter.”
Ms. Smith also shared that borrowers need the beds for different reasons. Some are temporary loans for someone recovering from surgery. Others are to allow a patient to be cared for at home for as long as necessary. “All of the borrowers are extremely grateful and amazed that we are a volunteer organization providing this service. Neither Medicare, Medicaid nor the VA can be assumed to be helping those who need this service. For some we are the only hope because there is no cost and we are here.”
For those with a yen to help neighbors in need, a vehicle that can transport this invaluable equipment, and a bit of brawn, the PRC will be thrilled to hear from you. However, be forewarned…it is entirely possible that doing this work may bring you into contact with emotional and grateful people. It is also possible that, according to Sue Smith, “you will come away with a full heart and understanding of what it means to be a good neighbor.”
