Obituary, Martin F. “Marty” Grossman


Martin F. “Marty” Grossman passed away at his home in Wassaic, NY on February 25, 2019, at the age of 81.

Marty was born on September 16, 1937, in Yonkers, NY, the son of Martin C. and Frances (Brickelmaier) Grossman.  He grew up in Yonkers and spent many happy summers on Peach Lake, North Salem with his two cousins, Bill and Frank Brickelmaier, who were more like brothers, as their parents married brother and sister.  With the Grossman’s cottage on the west side of the lake and the Brickelmaier’s cottage on the east side, they motorboated back and forth over the lake to visit each other.

Marty attended P.S. 27, Hawthorne Jr. High, and the Saunders Trade School.  He received a BS in Civil Engineering from the University of Rhode Island and a BS in Electrical Engineering from New York University.

He served his country in the New York State National Guard, serving six months in the 107th Regiment in Ft. Dix, NJ from August 1960 to February 1961, and was discharged from reserve duty in 1963.

He worked at various consulting engineering firms at the start, then New York Central Railroad/Penn Central Railroad, New York Telephone, and Metro-North Railroad as an electrical & civil engineer. Marty loved all animals, especially his dog, Pixey, and his cat, Pika.

He is survived by his cousins, including his cousin Frank and wife Veronica of Sewell, NJ, and Bill of Millbrook, NY, and many long-time friends, especially Frank Savarese, Judy (Stahl) Stoog, and Jeff Vanwagenen at the Danbury Railroad Museum.

A funeral service will be conducted on Friday, March 22nd at 10 AM at the Horn & Thomes, Inc. Funeral Home, 83 East Main Street, Pawling, then to Woodlawn Cemetery in the Bronx.
