Rep. Antonio Delgado Helps Introduce Equality Act to Bar LGBTQ Discrimination

WASHINGTON, DC – Today, U.S. Representative Antonio Delgado (NY-19) signed on as an original cosponsor to the Equality Act, which expands existing civil rights law by explicitly banning discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation or gender identity.

“Discrimination in any form is fundamentally wrong and a violation of our American principles,” Delgado said. “No one should lose their job or get kicked out of their housing because of who they are. The fact that it is currently legal in most states to discriminate against LGBTQ individuals is unconscionable, and I’m glad to join so many of my colleagues in righting this wrong.”

The Equality Act amends the Civil Rights Act of 1964 by adding sexual orientation and gender identity to the ban on discrimination already in place based on race, color, religion, sex, or national origin. Delgado is an original cosponsor of the bill, and he joined a press conference today at the Capitol to announce it.
