PRESS RELEASE

Washington, New York – On April 6, 2015, the New York State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigation from the Poughkeepsie barracks arrested Michael W. Wellington, 45 years old, of Millbrook, New York, for Identity Theft 2nd Degree, a Class E Felony.

On March 13, 2015, Troopers received a walk-in fraud complaint at Troop K Headquarters. The victim stated that he received a transfer of debt notification from Central Hudson alleging that he has an outstanding electrical bill from property located on Route 82 in the Town of Washington, in the amount of $1200. The victim advised that he did not own a residence on Route 82, which prompted him to file a fraud complaint with Central Hudson, as well as the police.

Investigation revealed that the property receiving the electrical service under the assumed identity was owned by Michael Wellington. Wellington, an ex-employee of the victim, assumed his identity to obtain electrical services from Central Hudson, at no cost to him.

Wellington was arraigned before the Town of Washington Court and released after posting $500 bail. He is scheduled to return to the Town of Washington Court on April 28, 2015.
