Obituary, Stephen Clifford Wachenfeld

Stephen Clifford Wachenfeld was born on December 9, 1942, in Newburgh, N.Y. to Lillian Kennedy Wachenfeld and Stephen Charles Wachenfeld and passed away on January 16, 2019, in the Hospice of the Piedmont, Charlottesville, Va. He is survived by his devoted wife of 51 years, Margaret Fischer Wachenfeld; his children, Robert Stephen (Kelli), Edward Thomas (Ruth), Amy Wachenfeld Eagen (Tim), and Caryn Louise; his brother, Timothy (Lisa) of Cincinnati; his sister, Jo-Anne Martin of Placentia, Calif.; his brother-in-law, John Fischer of Louisville, Ky.; two nephews, and a niece.

He is also survived by 11 grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren, and many beloved Wachenfeld cousins. Stephen loved his life’s profession of education both as a teacher and as a principal in Dover Plains, N.Y. and Roslyn, N.Y. He always looked forward to every day at school and believed he had made an impact on his students and staffs. In 1999, Stephen and Margaret retired to Lake Monticello, Va., where Stephen was a member of the Gray Foxes golf group and was chairman of the golf committee. His true retirement passion was traveling the world with Margaret and service to the Episcopal Diocese of Virginia and Grace Episcopal Church, Keswick, Va.

At the time of his death he was Senior Warden of Grace Church and had just finished a three year term on the Standing Committee of the Diocese. A memorial service will be held at Grace Church, Keswick on Saturday, February 16, 2019, at 2 p.m. In lieu of flowers please make donations to the Grace Church Capital Campaign Fund, Grace Church Keswick, P.O.
