Copake man arrested for possessing a stolen vehicle

Columbia County Sheriff David P. Bartlett reports the arrest of 40-year-old Jeremiah Simpson of County Route 7A Copake, New York for possessing a stolen vehicle in the Town of Claverack.

The Sheriff’s Office received a complaint on December 23rd, 2018 from a Copake resident that his vehicle had been stolen from his residence the previous evening. Family members of the victim placed information about the stolen vehicle on social media and on December 24th, 2018 the Sheriff’s Office received information that the stolen vehicle was possibly in the Town of Claverack. Deputy Sheriff Peter Merante responded to the described location, which will remain undisclosed at this time, located and recovered the vehicle.

Sheriff’s Office Investigators Ian Boehme and Patrick Logue continued with the investigation and were able to determine that Mr. Simpson possessed the vehicle on December 23rd, 2018 in the Town of Claverack. Subsequently, Mr. Simpson was arrested by investigators on Thursday December 27th, 2018 at 1:50pm without incident and is charged with Criminal Possession of Stolen Property which is a Class D Felony.

Simpson was arraigned before the Honorable Judge Michael Brandon in the Town of Claverack court and was remanded to the Columbia County Jail in lieu of $1,000 cash bail or $2,000 bail bond. He will return to court at a later date. The Sheriff’s Office was assisted by the Columbia County District Attorney’s Office.
