TRAFFIC STOP IN PATTERSON YIELDS THE ARRESTS OF A BREWSTER MAN ON DRUG POSSESSION CHARGES AND A BREWSTER WOMAN ON A WARRANT

Putnam County Sheriff Robert L. Langley Jr. reports the arrests of two people after a Deputy Sheriff initiated a traffic stop. On November 20, 2018, Deputy Kevin Radovich observed a vehicle commit traffic violations on State Route 22, in the Town of Patterson. Deputy Radovich initiated a traffic stop on the vehicle. While conducting the traffic stop, Deputy Radovich learned that the driver, John Covias, age 40, of Brewster, had a suspended New York State Driver’s License, and also had two active warrants out of the Dutchess County Sheriff’s Office. Further investigation revealed that Mr. Covias was in possession of alleged heroin. Mr. Covias was also found to be in possession of hypodermic needles, for which he did not have a prescription. In addition, Deputy Radovich learned that the vehicle’s passenger, Benlynx Garcia, age 35, also of Brewster, had an active warrant out of the Putnam County Sheriff’s Office. Both Mr. Covias and Ms. Garcia were placed under arrest and transported to the Putnam County Correctional Facility for arrest processing. Mr. Covias was charged with Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance in the Seventh Degree (Class A Misdemeanor), Aggravated Unlicensed Operation of a Motor Vehicle (Unclassified Misdemeanor) and Possession of a Hypodermic Instrument (Class A Misdemeanor). Mr. Covias was processed, posted $250.00 cash bail, and was issued an appearance ticket returnable to the Town of Patterson Justice Court. Mr. Covias was then turned over to the Dutchess County Sheriff’s Office, for his active warrants. Ms. Garcia was processed and transported to the Town of Patterson Justice Court for arraignment. Ms. Garcia was arraigned by the Honorable Justice Anthony Mole. Justice Mole remanded Ms. Garcia to the Putnam County Correctional Facility on $250.00 cash-bail/$500.00 bail-bond. Ms. Garcia posted bail and was released. Both Mr. Covias and Ms. Garcia are due back in the Town of Patterson Justice Court.
