PEEKSKILL MAN SENTENCED TO 24 YEARS FOR DRUG SALES

CARMEL, NEW YORK – November 14, 2018: Putnam County District Attorney Robert V. Tendy announced today that 39 year old Peekskill resident Omar Miles was sentenced today by Judge James T. Rooney to 24 years in state prison.

Miles was convicted by a Putnam jury this past September of three counts of Criminal Sale of a Controlled Substance in the 3rd Degree and three counts of Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance in the 3rd Degree. The defendant, a six-time convicted felon, faced up to 36 years in state prison.

While on parole, Miles sold cocaine on three different dates in October of 2017 throughout Putnam County. He was arrested by the Putnam County Sheriff’s Office Narcotics Enforcement Unit on October 20, 2017.

Prior to this arrest, the defendant had twelve prior contacts with the criminal justice system and six prior felony convictions, all for drug sales. Noting the defendant’s past criminal record, Judge Rooney characterized it as having been “turn-style justice that has occurred.”

At sentence, Assistant District Attorney Breanne Smith said that “Omar Miles is the definition of a recidivist, a career criminal. Each day he is in jail is one less day that his drug dealing can victimize our community and one more day that the people of Putnam County are a little bit safer than before.”

Prior to handing down sentence, Judge Rooney said “Drug sale is not a victimless crime. It is simply profiteering on the misery of others.” Upon his release, Miles will remain on parole supervision for 6 years. The case was prosecuted by Assistant District Attorneys Breanne Smith and Patricia Rau. Involved law enforcement agencies were the Putnam County Sheriff’s Office and the New York State Police Crime Laboratory.
