Obituary, Daniel L. Dumas

Daniel L. Dumas, a lifelong Pawling resident, passed away on Nov. 7, 2018 after a long and valiant battle with Parkinson’s disease and cancer. He was 68.
 
Dan was born on May 1, 1950 to Darrell and Jean Dumas.  He was a 1968 graduate of Pawling High School, where he was class president and a star on the varsity football team. He later went on to play Division 1 football at the University of Rhode Island, where he was also a member of the Phi Gamma Delta fraternity (Kappa Ro chapter). He was eventually inducted into the Pawling High School Sports Hall of Fame.  On June 7, 1975, he married his beloved wife, Victoria Osborne.
He started his professional career as a vice president for the National Bank of Pawling (now Key Bank) and later took a position with Pawling Corp., where he worked for 25 years until his retirement.
Dan was very active in the Pawling community throughout his life and sports were often at the core. He was co-founder of Pawling Youth Basketball; a Little League coach for 11 years; a Pawling Youth Hockey coach for nine years, where he served as president for four years; a Pawling Youth Soccer coach for three years (although he knew little about the sport, he coached his first game from start to finish!); and was a three-year member of the Dutchess County Youth Board.
He served three years as a trustee on the Pawling Board of Education, and was a member of the Lions Club, where, as president, he helped facilitate a fundraising effort to purchase a Jaws of Life for the Pawling Fire Department.
He was an avid softball player and played in several leagues throughout the region. In 1970, he played in a charity basketball game against New York Giants players to raise money for the Pawling Little League.
He was a huge New York Yankees and New York Giants fan and had a passion for collecting baseball cards and sports memorabilia. He was an avid gardener and loved playing poker with his friends.
 
 A loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend, Dan was known and admired by so many people for his kind spirit and generosity.  His warmth and passion for life will be missed by his family and abundance of friends.
 
He was predeceased by his parents, Darrell and Jean (Cunningham) Dumas. Most important to Dan throughout his life was family.
 
Surviving are his wife, Victoria (Osborne) Dumas, their two children, Geoffrey (Gretchen Woolley Dumas) and Renee (Vincent Madigan), four grandchildren, Connor Woolley, Gavin Dumas, Maia Dumas, and Mackenzie Madigan, brother Robert Dumas, and sister, Diane Ennis (Mark). He is also survived by several nieces and nephews, aunts, uncles, and cousins.
 
Calling hours will be held Sunday, November 11th from 2:00-6:00 pm at Horn & Thomes, Inc.  Funeral Home, 83 E Main St Pawling. Funeral Services will be held at 10:00 am on Monday, November 12th with burial to follow. In lieu of flowers, donations in Dan’s name to can be made to Pawling Youth Hockey, PO Box 486, Pawling, NY  12564 or Pawling Resource Center, PO Box 331, Pawling, NY  12564.
