RESERVE A SPOT TODAY AT THE CAREGIVER CONFERENCE

November is National Family Caregivers Month, a time to draw attention to the challenges facing the more than 50 million family caregivers across the country. If you’re a family or professional caregiver, your chance to take a break from the routine and get answers to your caregiving questions is coming up at the 14th annual Conference on Caregiving, to be held on Friday, November 16th at the Grandview, 176 Rinaldi Blvd. in Poughkeepsie. The free day-long event begins with 8:30 a.m. registration, but you must sign up in advance by this Friday, November 9th. To make a reservation, call the Alzheimer’s Association at (800) 272-3900. A continental breakfast and lunch are included, but space is limited.

The theme for the conference is “Caregiving – A Highwire Act.” Topics to be covered include planning for the period after a senior is discharged from the hospital, Medicare and Medicaid issues, pooled trusts, laughter yoga, and scam prevention.

The event is organized with help from Always There Home Care, the Alzheimer’s Association (Hudson Valley chapter), Health Quest, Hudson Valley Hospice, Hudson Valley Veterans Administration, the Parkinson’s Disease Support Group of the Mid-Hudson Valley, Mid Hudson Regional Hospital and Wingate Healthcare.

If you’re unable to come to the conference, the Office for the Aging is still here to help. Part of our mission is to help thank, support, educate and celebrate the selfless individuals who are trying to provide their loved one with the best possible care, yet in the process may not be taking the best care of themselves.

The Office for the Aging has devoted a part of our website, www.dutchessny.gov/aging, to information to assist caregivers. If you do not have internet access, call our office at (845) 486-2555 and ask to have a Caregiver Services brochure sent to you.

SENIORS’ RECIPE SWAP

We’re looking to help seniors share their favorite Thanksgiving and holiday recipes. It could be a recipe for the main course, a side dish, a vegan option, or a dessert. Long as it’s yummy, we’ll accept it – and if it’s also healthy, so much the better. Email your recipes to bjones@dutchessny.gov or mail them to the Office for the Aging using the address at the end of this article, to the attention of Outreach Coordinator Brian Jones.

Some recipes will be passed along in our weekly Aging News emails, and at least one will appear in the winter edition of our quarterly “Spotlight on Seniors” newsletter.

If you haven’t signed up for Aging News emails, go to our Dutchess Delivery service: www.dutchessny.gov/DutchessDelivery. Once you’ve signed up, emails will arrive in your inbox every Friday.

To request an Office for the Aging presentation for your senior, social and/or civic group, get in touch with outreach coordinator Brian Jones at (845) 486-2555 or bjones@dutchessny.gov. All your group needs to provide is a venue that’s wheelchair-accessible and open to the public, with space to set up a projector and screen.  We have our own projector and screen – but if you have those, let us know.

We feature presentations on Successful Aging, Office for the Aging services, Medicare/Medicaid, scam prevention, senior housing, a wide range of topics related to nutrition, and more!
