Cary Institute lecture –  Breakpoint: Reckoning with America’s Environmental Crises

Millbrook, NY – On Friday, October 26 at 7pm, join Cary Institute for a presentation by Jeremy Jackson, Emeritus Professor of Oceanography at Scripps Institution of Oceanography and Senior Scientist Emeritus at Smithsonian Institution. Jackson will talk about his new book, Breakpoint: Reckoning with America’s Environmental Crises.

Co-written with award-winning journalist Steve Chapple, the book offers practical solutions to minimize the destruction caused by industrial agriculture, sea level rise, wildfires, water mismanagement, and extreme weather. Through cross-country travels and interviews with farmers, fishermen, scientists, and policymakers, Jackson and Chapple use storytelling to reveal environmental breakpoints that threaten our wellbeing and steps that can minimize risk, improve lives, and preserve our country’s future.

“Thought-provoking, informative, and, ultimately, hopeful.”—Elizabeth Kolbert, author of The Sixth Extinction: An Unnatural History

Jackson is the author of 160 scientific publications and eleven books. He is a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and has received numerous prizes and awards including the BBVA International Prize in Ecology and Conservation, the Paleontological Medal, and the Darwin Medal of the International Society for Reef Studies. Jackson’s work on the collapse of coastal ecosystems was chosen by Discover magazine as the outstanding scientific achievement of 2001.

Cary Institute of Ecosystem Studies is an independent nonprofit center for environmental research. Since 1983, our scientists have been investigating the complex interactions that govern the natural world and the impacts of climate change on these systems. Our findings lead to more effective management and policy actions and increased environmental literacy. Our staff are global experts in the ecology of: cities, disease, forests, and freshwater.
