Award-Winning Author, Historian to Lecture at DCC

 

October 9, 2018 – Author and historian Russell Shorto will discuss “The Dutch in Us: The Remarkable Influence of the Netherlands on New York and Beyond” at Dutchess Community College Oct. 16 at 7 p.m. in the James and Betty Hall Theatre. The presentation is the second event in the Dr. D. David Conklin Distinguished Lecture Series, established to recognize DCC’s fourth president who retired in 2014.

Shorto will talk about how a mid-17th century Dutch colony in Manhattan played a role in creating core American values such as individual rights, religious freedom and free trade. Shorto is the author of books including “The Island at the Center of the World: The Epic Story of Dutch Manhattan and the Forgotten Colony that Shaped America.”
