Tales from the Ancient Documents: Crime and Society in early Milan and Pine Plains

How did early Dutchess County’s credit economy operate and what problems did it cause? What methods did town fathers use to control disorderly taverns? What led to the end of the mission at Shekomeko? Why were town fathers eager to curb bastardy?

For answers to these and other questions, join Dutchess County Historian William P. Tatum III for a journey through the Ancient Documents Collection and the stories it reveals. Consisting of early Dutchess County Court records, the Ancient Documents Collection has been the focus of an on-going digitization project, focused on providing word-searchable worldwide access to these documents for the first time in their 300 year history. The tales that have emerged from this project provide a new and intimate window into the experience of local life during the county’s formative decades.
