Faso Highlights Federal Grant Funding Going to State for March 2017 Storms

Washington D.C. – Congressman John Faso (R-Kinderhook) today highlighted a Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) grant for the State of New York issued in response to winter storms that occurred from March 14th—15th 2017. The $1,288,637 million grant will be directed to the state which can distribute the funding to several counties designated as Public Assistance-Designated Counties. A map of those counties is here.

“This federal grant funding will help local governments recover from last year’s winter storm in March that caused tremendous damage and financial strain on already tight budgets,” said Faso. “I’m pleased that FEMA responded positively to New York State’s application and will continue to work with the counties to ensure they get the money they need.”

Commonly, this sort of grant funding is used to reimburse localities for the cost of activities such as snow removal and related expenditures.

Background

On July 12, 2017, the President issued a Major Disaster Declaration for New York State which allowed the release of Federal funding to assist communities recovering from winter storms that occurred from March 14-15, 2017.  The declaration established several counties across the state as Public Assistance-Designated Counties including Broome, Columbia, Delaware, Dutchess, Greene, Montgomery, Otsego, Rensselaer, Schoharie, Sullivan, and Ulster.

The Public Assistance Program provides funding to state and local governments to support response and recovery from disasters. This program is tailored to help with debris removal, emergency protection, and permanent infrastructure restoration.  The funding provided from FEMA was designated to New York State for disbursement to impacted counties to help offset storm response costs.
