Faso-Slaughter Bill to Honor Maurice Hinchey Passes House

Washington D.C. – Congressman John Faso (R-Kinderhook) today highlighted House passage of a bill to rename the post office at 111 Market St, Saugerties, New York after late United States Representative Maurice Hinchey. The late-Rep. Louise Slaughter is an original co-sponsor and was the leading Democrat in the House advocating for the bill. The bill now goes to the Senate for consideration.

Excerpt from Rep. Faso’s remarks, as prepared for delivery, during consideration of the bill:

“Congressman Hinchey was a lifelong New Yorker and a true public servant.  He passed away at his home in Saugerties, New York on November 22nd, 2017 at the age of 79.  He is survived by his wife, Ilene Marder, and his three adult children.  He is fondly remembered as a staunch advocate for what he believed, including care for U.S. military veterans and the environment through his support of the Clean Air Act and the Hudson River Heritage Area.”

Congressman Maurice Hinchey served New Yorkers for thirty-eight years across terms in the New York State Assembly (1974-1992) and the U.S. House of Representatives (1992-2012).

He is best known for being an unflinching advocate for the environment through his support of the Clean Air Act, the protection of the Hudson River and his long-time support for US military veterans.

Representative Hinchey served in the United States Navy from 1956-1959.
