Two Men Face Multiple Drug Charges

Putnam County Sheriff Donald B. Smith reports the arrest of two men on narcotics possession charges following a traffic stop on Route 6 in the Town of Carmel.

On March 15, 2015 at approximately 2:30 a.m., deputies assigned to the Narcotic Enforcement Unit (NEU) observed a motorist commit several traffic violations on Route 6. During an ensuing traffic stop, the driver of the vehicle was uncooperative and refused to comply with the deputies’ instructions. An investigation at the scene revealed that there was a quantity of cocaine, marijuana and a digital scale in the vehicle and that both the driver and a passenger were the subject of active arrest warrants. Additionally, the driver was in possession of three counterfeit $100.00 bills, and was determined to have been driving while he held a suspended license.

The deputies arrested Akintunde Akinleye, 26, of Fox Hill Road, Cortlandt Manor, New York and charged him with the following criminal offenses: Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance in the Fifth Degree and with Criminal Possession of a Forged Instrument in the First Degree, felonies; Resisting Arrest, Obstructing Governmental Administration and Criminally Using Drug Paraphernalia in the Second Degree, misdemeanors; and several traffic violations. It was determined that Mr. Akinleye was the subject of several arrest warrants issued by the City of Yonkers Justice Court on narcotics, obstruction and trespass charges.

The deputies also arrested Alberto Aviles, 26, of Argyle Street, Putnam Valley and charged him with Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance in the Fifth Degree, a felony; Criminally Using Drug Paraphernalia, a misdemeanor; and Unlawful Possession of Marijuana, a violation. It was determined that Mr. Aviles was wanted for traffic offenses in Maricopa County, Arizona.

The two defendants were arraigned before Town of Putnam Valley Justice Louis DiCarlo. Mr. Akinleye was remanded to the Putnam County Correctional Facility without bail and Mr. Aviles was committed to the Putnam County Correctional Facility in lieu of $1,500.00 cash bail pending future court appearances.

If found guilty of the misdemeanor charges, the defendant could face up to a year in jail and a fine of up to $1,000.00.
