Obituary, Jean Singer Foster

Jean Singer Foster, a long-time resident of Poughkeepsie, NY died unexpectedly on December 1, 2017.

Jean is survived by her daughter, Beth Foster Debyah, her husband Michael Debyah and their children Alexander and Zoe of South Weymouth, MA. She is also survived by brothers Norman Singer of Arlington, VA (Sandra) and Paul R. Singer, Chapel Hill, NC (Katherine), and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her son Jeffrey Allen Foster, her parents, Murray and Loretta LaMarca Singer and her former spouse, Donald Foster.

Jean was born in New York City on July 24, 1942. She attended Great Neck Schools and graduated from Green Mountain College in Vermont in 1962. She worked for IBM in Poughkeepsie for many years, and also enjoyed a short career as a travel agent. She retired from Rhinebeck Savings Bank in 2013.

Jean married Donald Foster, a skilled draftsman, who was well known in the Poughkeepsie area as a pilot and a WKIP traffic broadcaster.

Jean was a devoted and loving mother and grandmother, as well as caring sister to Norman and Paul. She was an active member of Immanuel Christian Reformed Church, having taught Sunday school there for over 40 years. After her retirement, she spent time volunteering for Literacy Volunteers, Book Buddies in the City of Poughkeepsie schools and later became a dedicated hospice volunteer. She will be deeply missed by her friends, her extended family, and all who knew her.

There will be no calling hours. A funeral service is planned for 1:00 PM on Thursday, December 7th at the Immanuel Reformed Church at 253 Myers Corners Road in Wappingers Falls, NY. Pastor William Hanchett will officiate. Burial will follow at Beekman Cemetery in Poughquag where she will be laid to rest beside her beloved son Jeffrey.

Arrangements have been entrusted to the Horn and Thomes, Inc. Funeral Home, 83 East Main Street in Pawling, NY. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made in Jean’s memory to Hudson Valley Hospice.
