Obituary, Margaret S. Wing

Poughkeepsie – Margaret S. Wing 94 of the Town of Poughkeepsie died peacefully at home on Tuesday November 7, 2017 surrounded by the love of her family.

Born in New Bedford, Massachusetts she was the daughter of the late Cornelius and Mary Murray Sullivan. In November of 1940 she married Peter J. Smith, he predeceased her in August of 1974. In May of 1985 Margaret got remarried to Harold Wing he also predeceased her in January of 2007. Margaret moved to Millbrook, NY in 1940 and since has been lifetime resident of Dutchess County.

Margaret was a graduate of Holy Family High School in New Bedford and the Kreisler Business Institute in Poughkeepsie. Margaret was an administrative assistant and bookkeeper for Gordon S. Anderson Manufacturing for 50 years. She also worked part-time for the William J. Long Crane Service for 8 years.

Margaret was a member of St. Stanislaus and St. Mary’s Churches and the Kevin Barry Irish Club. She loved music and traveling. She went on many trips to Ireland, Florida, Arizona, California and Cape Cod. She had a special love for the beach, family gatherings and her Irish heritage. She was always the host of family events and established many ongoing family traditions.

Margaret is survived by her son Thomas Smith and his wife Joann of The Villages, FL, daughter Patricia Long and her husband John of Poughkeepsie, NY and her son Brian Smith and his wife Carol of Santee, CA. Margaret is also survived by her grandchildren and their spouses: Thomas Smith (Meeja), Jennifer Smith (Paul), Tracy Smith (Thomas), Kathleen Ryan (Larry), John Long (Stacie), Timothy Long, Brian Long, Eileen Long Bonelli (Thomas), Michael Smith ( Michelle), Kelly Reed (Bryan) and her adoring 18 great grandchildren.

Margaret was predeceased by her sisters Mary Mattos, Catherine Booker, Eileen Hart and Anna St. Pierre.

Margaret, also known as Maggie, was a caring and loving wife, mother, grandmother, sister, daughter, aunt and friend; her family was always the first priority in her life. She was a woman of great faith and inspired many by her words and example. Maggie was the family matriarch to a large family that loved her dearly. She was gentle in her manner but fierce in her love. She was young at heart and always enjoyed a good laugh. She could keep pace with all her great grandchildren and was always eager to teach them new things. She could speak volumes to you by just holding your hand. She will be greatly missed by all those who knew and love her.

Calling hours will be held Sunday November 12, 2017 from 2pm to 6pm at  371 Hooker Ave. Poughkeepsie, New York 12603. A Funeral Mass will be held 9am Monday November 13, 2017 at St Martin dePorres Church Poughkeepsie, New York with burial to follow at St Joseph’s Cemetery Millbrook, New York.

The family would like to thank the caring staff of Hospice and the nursing assistants who came to her home for their kindness and compassion during these past few months.
