Join the Wisecracking, Heart Warming Women of “Steel Magnolias”

It’s 1987 and the place is Truvy’s Beauty Salon where the motto is ‘There is no such thing as natural beauty’. Make an appointment for the Staged Reading of “Steel Magnolias” on Saturday, September 9th at 7:00 PM at the Cultural Arts Coalition’s Studio Around the Corner at 67 Main Street in Brewster.

The story of the six strong southern women is based on a true event in the life of its author Robert Harling. The play which opened Off-Broadway in 1987, quickly moved to Broadway a few short months later. The highly acclaimed film adaptation was release in 1989.

“This inspired play can make you laugh and cry within a heartbeat. The performance will help the audience focus on the words and emotions they evoke,” explains director, Margaret Carey, “the fact that the actors are holding scripts will be inconsequential.”

Spend an evening, where all the ladies who are “anybody” come to have their hair done. Helped by her eager assistant, Annelle (Diana DiMarco), the wisecracking Truvy (Katrina Snyder) dispenses shampoos and free advice to the town’s rich curmudgeon, Ouiser (Karen Symington); an eccentric millionaire, Miss Clairee (Diane Preston); and the local social leader, M’lynn (Lori Franzese), whose daughter, Shelby (Jenna Isabella), is about to marry a “good ole boy.” Filled with hilarious repartee and not a few acerbic, but humorously revealing verbal collisions, the play moves toward tragedy. The underlying strength–and love–give the play, and it’s characters, the special quality to make them truly touching, funny, and marvelously amiable company in good times and bad. The Avangrid Foundation on behalf of NYSEG, as the grand sponsor of this series.

Steel Magnolias is presented by special arrangement with Dramatists Play Service, Inc., New York.

The Cultural Arts Coalition presents the staged reading free to the community. Space is limited and reservations are strongly suggestion. RSVP:  www.CulturalArtsCo.com,  email info@culturalartsco.com  or call 845.363.8330

About The Town of Southeast Cultural Arts Coalition

The Town of Southeast Cultural Arts Coalition is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to creating and sustaining cultural arts within the Town of Southeast and its surrounding region. TOSCAC was established as a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit corporation in August 2010 with the purpose, as detailed in the incorporation papers, “… to promote and raise funds for the development and effective management of affordable, accessible performance space that will provide citizens of the Town of Southeast opportunities to participate in and appreciate cultural arts, including lectures, theater, dance, film, music, visual arts, and inclusive community events.”

Our current focus is the renovation of the Southeast Old Town Hall, a historic landmark within the Village of Brewster and a perfect venue to serve as a cultural hub. The Old Town Hall has been described as a “Jewel in the Center of Brewster” and its renovation will help foster the revitalization of downtown Brewster.
