WEBUTUCK TEACHERS’ ASSOCIATION SECURES OVER $35,000 IN DONATIONS
FOR READING PROGRAM

AMENIA, NY, AUGUST 25, 2017 — The Webutuck Teachers’ Association has received over $35,000 in private donations in order to bring the Journeys Core Reading Program to the Webutuck Central School District. Led by WTA President Rebecca Garrard, the teachers’ union reached out to local benefactors and negotiated with Houghton Mifflin to make this possible.

Development Firm Stoneleaf Partners donated over $15,000 to the WTA. An anonymous out of state donor, with a history of backing educational endeavors, contributed the remaining $20,000.

The Journeys Core Reading Program is an award winning literacy program developed by teachers and based on the latest scientific research about what makes literacy instruction effective. Journeys received the highest possible rating from the Center for Research and Reform in Education from Johns Hopkins University. Garrard believes the impact of this on the educational program at Webutuck will be substantial. “With this donation from the WTA to the district, our students will be able to utilize engaging materials which spark their love of learning. In addition, this program is comprehensive, evidence-based, and provides numerous resources to our teachers which improve our ability to provide the highest quality instruction to our students. The Webutuck Teachers’ Association is extremely proud to have been able to make this happen for our students and the community.”
