TAKE THE WHEEL FOR THE OFFICE FOR THE AGING

If you’ve been searching for a way to give of your time, and you enjoy driving your car in the beautiful countryside of Dutchess County, we have immediate volunteering opportunities that will allow you to enjoy both. The Office for the Aging is in need of volunteer drivers to make deliveries for our Home Delivered Meal program, especially in southeastern and eastern areas of the county, including the towns of Pawling, Union Vale and Amenia. Additionally, we’re often in need of substitute drivers and volunteer drivers throughout Dutchess. The program operates Mondays through Thursdays (and on Fridays in the City of Poughkeepsie); we reimburse for mileage; and we’d love to have your help whether you’re available for only one day a week or the full week. Your auto insurance policy also covers your volunteer driving.

To volunteer, complete the form that’s available at this link: http://www.co.dutchess.ny.us/CountyGov/Departments/Aging/AGvolunteers.pdf and send it to the Dutchess County Office for the Aging, 27 High St., Poughkeepsie NY 12601.

Outside county government, several chapters of the nationwide Meals on Wheels organization serve senior citizens in Dutchess County, including in the following communities:

GET THOSE NOMINATIONS IN

Friday, March 31, is the deadline to submit your nominations to the Office for the Aging for 2017 Dutchess County Senior Citizens of the Year. We will honor a male, female and couple of the year at the annual Celebration of Aging, which is being held at Villa Borghese in Wappingers Falls on Monday, May 22.

If you believe a senior Dutchess County resident demonstrates outstanding commitment to your community, we’d love to have you tell their story. Go into as much detail as you’d like, but remember that March 31 is our deadline. You can email your nominations tobjones@dutchessny.gov, or deliver them to the Office for the Aging, 27 High St. in Poughkeepsie.

Our Advisory Board will review the nominations and choose honorees in April.

If you would like to attend the Celebration of Aging, there is a reservation form available in the spring edition of the Office for the Aging’s “Spotlight on Seniors” newsletter, available at libraries throughout Dutchess County. To get a copy of the “Spotlight” mailed to you, call the Office for the Aging at (845) 486-2555, or (866) 486-2555 outside the 845 area code.

AND SPEAKING OF AREA CODES

The new 838 area code is being phased in this month in parts of New York, including northeastern Dutchess County, covered by the 518 area code. According to the state Public Service Commission, no current 518 phone numbers will change; but after August 19, callers with a 518/838 phone number will need to use a full 10-digit phone number for all calls, including within their own area code.

Golden Living is prepared by the Dutchess County Office for the Aging, 27 High Street, Poughkeepsie, New York 12601, telephone (845) 486-2555, email: ofa@dutchessny.gov website: http://www.dutchessny.gov/CountyGov/Departments/Aging/AGIndex.htm
