New 3D printing service at SUNY New Paltz takes businesses to next level
NEW PALTZ–The Hudson Valley Advanced Manufacturing Center (HVAMC) at SUNY New Paltz announced the launch of the Build Business Platform, a new service dedicated to making real-world 3D printing application, design education and technology accessible to the campus community and businesses and entrepreneurs.
“Over the last four years, we have built the HVAMC into a unique academic center that combines design and materials expertise with the most advanced technology 3D printing has to offer, available to everyone from manufacturers to individual inventors,” said Daniel Freedman, HVAMC director and dean of the School of Science & Engineering. “The Build Business Platform is the next phase of evolution for the HVAMC customer experience and the next step in helping to grow new businesses in the Hudson Valley.”
In keeping with HVAMC’s collaborative philosophy, the new initiative was created in partnership with Garnet S. Heraman, a seasoned investor with 25 years of experience in early stage ventures, business strategy and brand development, and Wallace Patterson, a 3D printing industry executive with a decade of experience at leading companies including Shapeways and MakerBot. The duo will guide students, businesses and entrepreneurs working with the HVAMC from prototyping to production to ventures. The College’s School of Business students will also work alongside Heraman and Patterson to help provide business planning and marketing support to clients and work on real-world problems that could potentially lead to internships or post-grad employment.
“Once a project is completed with the HVAMC, this platform gives regional businesses and students access to expertise and resources needed to explore the full commercial potential of their work,” said Heraman. “The service fills a gap in the additive manufacturing market, and the HVAMC is the first lab of its kind to offer it.”
“The accessibility and the practical competencies of the HVAMC make it an obvious choice for regional businesses to work with. They have the tools and knowledge required to move you from an idea to a prototype. The purpose of the Build Business Platform is to take it to the next step. We’ll help move you from a prototype to a business,” added Patterson.
Since launching in spring 2013, the HVAMC has partnered with approximately 150 businesses and entrepreneurs from New York City to the Albany area. The Center also regularly engages the local community, area colleges and k-12 educators, from fields in the arts to sciences, through 3D printing workshops and courses.
In June 2016, SUNY New Paltz was the first institution of higher education to be designated a Stratasys-MakerBot Additive Research & Teaching or SMART lab by Stratasys, the largest 3D printer company in the world. At that time, the College also announced the launch of a new, 18-credit minor in digital design and fabrication—the result of a unique partnership between the Schools of Fine & Performing Arts and Science & Engineering to prepare a new generation of students to conceptualize and design for 21st century manufacturing.
