Dutchess County Office for the Aging’s AGING NEWS for the week of March 20

Dutchess County Office for the Aging’s

AGING NEWS

for the week of March 20

Note: Dutchess County and City of Poughkeepsie crews have been busy clearing snow day and night since last Tuesday’s blizzard, but as of 9:30 a.m. today they had not fully cleared the Office for the Aging parking lot or nearby parking spaces on High St, Croyden Ct. and Zimmer St. As a result, parking is limited at our High St. lot, and there are no handicapped spaces available. The nearest street with cleared on-street parking is Garden St., one block to the west of our lot.

            We have gotten word from the county Department of Public Works that the Office for the Aging lot will be cleared by Tuesdaymorning. When we get word on snow removal for the streets nearby, we’ll let you know in a follow-up email. Thanks for your understanding.

LEGAL ISSUES PRESENTATION IN PAWLING

If you have been seeking advice on estate planning and elder-law issues, circle April 3 at 2 p.m. on your calendar. That’s when local attorney John C. Wirth, Jr. will be discussing those subjects and explaining what you need to know in understandable terms at the Pawling Library (11 Broad St.). Among the topics to be covered during the presentation:

  • the role of elder law and the effect of elder abuse in the estate planning process;
  • an explanation of the various legal documents typically used in planning;
  • what probate is and how to avoid litigation in your estate;
  • the impact of estate and income taxation on your estate;
  • Medicaid as a source of payment for care of the elderly and infirm.

Space is limited, so call the Pawling Library for more information about this and other upcoming programming at (845) 855-3344.

For residents who are unable to afford a lawyer, the Dutchess County Office for the Aging contracts with private attorney Paul I. Weinberger to offer legal advice and, in some cases, representation on a suggested donation basis. The primary focus is generally on immediate threats to income, shelter, patients’ rights, and health matters, including advance directives. Clients are assisted in areas such as Medicaid and Medicare eligibility and termination; consumer issues and property rights.  Help is also available for evictions, access to public assistance and Social Security, and access to SSI.  Preparation of simple wills is also available.  Prospective clients may make an appointment by calling (845) 486-2555.
