Peekskill man charged with felony drug possession following traffic stop

Poughkeepsie, New York – On March 6, 2015, New York State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigation from the Wappinger barracks arrested Michael Cunningham, 25 years old, of Peekskill, New York, for Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance 5th Degree, a Class D Felony, Aggravated Unlicensed Operation 2nd Degree, a Misdemeanor, and Unlawful Possession of Marihuana, a Violation.

Troopers from the Wappinger barracks stopped a 2003 BMW traveling on South Road for failing to use a directional signal. As the vehicle came to a stop, the driver and the passenger exited the car and fled on foot. Following a brief foot pursuit, the driver of the vehicle, later identified as Cunningham, was taken into custody without further incident. Cunningham was arrested after investigation revealed that he was in possession of cocaine and marihuana.

A Dutchess County Sheriff’s Office K9 located the passenger on the banks of the Wappinger Creek. The passenger in the vehicle was not charged.

The State Police were assisted by the Town of Poughkeepsie Police Department, the Village of Wappinger Falls Police Department, the Dutchess County Sheriff’s Office, and the MTA Police Department.

Cunningham was arraigned before the Town of Poughkeepsie Court and remanded to the Dutchess County Jail without bail. He is scheduled to return to the Town of Poughkeepsie Court on March 10, 2015 at 4:00 p.m.
