Spokane’s 2025 Tacos y Tequila Festival Canceled Amid Safety Concerns

SPOKANE, Wash. — The highly anticipated 2025 Tacos y Tequila Festival, a two-day celebration of Latino culture scheduled for August 23–24, has been canceled. Organizers from Nuestras Raíces Centro Comunitario announced the decision, citing growing safety concerns tied to the current political climate.

Rising Safety and Security Concerns

In a public statement, Nuestras Raíces expressed deep concern about the “increasing anti-immigrant rhetoric” that has created an environment of uncertainty and risk. The organization noted that the festival, which was intended to be a free and open event for all, had sparked serious safety concerns among volunteers, staff, vendors, and performers.

“The open nature of the event, which was originally a strength, has now become a vulnerability,” the organization said. “We cannot, in good conscience, ask our community to gather under conditions that may not ensure their safety and well-being.”

A Difficult but Necessary Decision

This year’s event would have marked the festival’s fifth anniversary, celebrating Hispanic and Latino music, food, and cultural contributions to the Spokane community. Organizers emphasized that canceling the festival was not a decision made lightly, as the event has long stood as a vibrant symbol of unity and cultural pride.

Looking Ahead to 2026

Despite this setback, Nuestras Raíces remains committed to bringing the festival back. The group says it is actively working to address the concerns that led to the cancellation, with hopes of hosting a safer, more secure event in 2026.

“We’re committed to making next year’s festival a success,” the group stated. “But that means putting in the work now to ensure our community feels both welcome and protected.”

Financial Impact and Community Support

The cancellation is expected to have a significant financial impact on the organization. Nuestras Raíces is encouraging those who support their mission to consider donating via their official website to help offset the lost revenue and continue their community efforts.

As the organization regroups, the message is clear: safety, inclusivity, and cultural celebration must go hand in hand.
