Golden Living . . . News for Senior Citizens

Todd N. Tancredi, Director

Dutchess County Office for the Aging

If you’re approaching your 65th birthday this year, or just want to learn more about the Medicare program, the Office for the Aging holds ongoing free training sessions to help familiarize you with Medicare.

There are monthly workshops in the Poughkeepsie Galleria Community Room on the third Wednesday of every month from 10 a.m. until noon.  The next session takes place this Wednesday, January 18.  Medicare Prescription Drug Plans, EPIC, Medicare Advantage Plans, Medigap plans and more will be discussed.

In northern Dutchess, classes on Medicare are held on the fourth Monday of every month at 4 p.m. the Center for Healthy Aging at Northern Dutchess Hospital in Rhinebeck.  The next class is scheduled for Monday, January 23.

If you’re a little bit computer-savvy, the Adriance Memorial Library in the City of Poughkeepsie (93 Market St.) holds training sessions on navigating the website, Medicare.gov, on the fourth Wednesday of each month. The next session takes place on Wednesday, January 25 from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m.

Space is limited for all these workshops, so register in advance for any of them by calling the Office for the Aging at 845-486-2555.

Happy first anniversary to the Office for the Aging’s Senior Friendship Center in Rhinebeck, which made the move one year ago to its current location at Memorial Lutheran Church (1232 Route 308), in the hamlet of Rock City near where the town borders of Rhinebeck, Red Hook and Milan meet. The Friendship Center is open every Monday through Thursday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. All of our eight Senior Friendship Centers serve a nutritious midday meal and offer plenty of opportunities for socialization and events. For those without a car, transportation to the center and weekly grocery shopping may be available.  For more information about the Rhinebeck Friendship Center, call 845-758-0571.  For the Friendship Center nearest you, call 845-486-2555.

Spring will be here sooner than you think! The annual Celebration of Aging is taking place Monday, May 22 at Villa Borghese (70 Widmer Rd., Wappingers Falls). We will honor the Senior Citizens of the Year, Dutchess County residents turning 100 or older in 2017, and couples married for 70 years or more in 2017. If you know any seniors who meet any of those descriptions who’d like to be recognized, get in touch with the Office for the Aging at (845) 486-2555 or by emailing Outreach Coordinator Brian Jones at bjones@dutchessny.gov.

You can nominate a Senior of the Year now by filling out the nomination form available in the winter Spotlight on Seniors, available at all Dutchess County libraries or by following this link: http://www.co.dutchess.ny.us/CountyGov/Departments/Aging/SPOTLIGHTWinter2016final.pdf.             You can help our first responders and medical community prepare for the worst if you’re available on Tuesday, February 28 for an “OUREx” exercise at Vassar Brothers Medical Center in Poughkeepsie. The drill will help hospital personnel test their emergency response capabilities. . The exercise will focus on the hospital’s response efforts to a highly infectious strain of influenza with international impact. The “patients” – that’s you, the volunteers – will pretend to have flu symptoms and will go to the Emergency Department to be seen by our healthcare providers. At the conclusion of the exercise there will be a “hot wash”: a recap of the exercise, what went well and what improvements the hospital can make. For more information, get in touch with Health Quest System Safety & Emergency Preparedness Coordinator Lisa Corcoran at (845) 431-6829 or ecorcor1@health-quest.org.
