Serious Crash on Route 9 in Fishkill Prompts Extraction, Airlift, and Multi-Agency Response

A major crash on Route 9 in Fishkill late Wednesday night, July 23, led to a massive emergency response, with multiple victims, one requiring extraction, and at least one person airlifted to a trauma center.

Four Vehicles Involved, One Entrapment Reported

The collision occurred around 9:20 PM near Clove Road and Carol Lane, just south of the old Dutchess Mall. Emergency dispatchers received reports of a serious multi-vehicle accident involving at least four vehicles. Early communications mentioned both a possible ejection and a person trapped inside one of the vehicles.

Rombout Fire Company Leads Rapid Response

Upon arrival, the Rombout Fire Company initiated a Mass Casualty Incident (MCI) protocol due to the severity of the situation. That decision brought in additional resources, including:

  • Phillipstown EMS

  • Garrison EMS

  • Putnam County Medic 2

  • City of Beacon Medic 1

  • Town of Fishkill EMS and Police

  • New York State Police

Two medical helicopters were requested, with Lifenet Air 2 ultimately transporting one patient to a regional trauma center for advanced care. A second air unit was placed on standby.

Helicopter Landing Zone Established at Dutchess Mall

Under the coordination of Rombout Fire Chief Marino and the Village of Fishkill, a helicopter landing zone was set up at the Dutchess Mall. This location provided safe access for the air ambulances while medical crews worked to stabilize patients at the crash site.

17-Minute Vehicle Extraction Saves Victim

Firefighters successfully extricated one trapped victim after 17 minutes of careful and coordinated work. While that effort was underway, other emergency responders triaged and treated multiple patients on scene. The total number of injured individuals has not yet been confirmed.

Fire Chief Commends All Responders

Rombout Fire Chief Marino issued a statement praising the professionalism and efficiency of all personnel involved:

“We commend our crews for their swift and professional response under difficult circumstances. The coordinated efforts between our firefighters, EMS, and air medical teams played a vital role in providing immediate and advanced care to those injured.”

The chief also acknowledged the assistance of Dutchess County Cars 7, 13, and 71, as well as Putnam County Car 2, Kent EMS, Empress EMS, Hackensack Air, and others.

Road Reopened After Hours-Long Closure
