SANDWICH CLUB CONVENES FOR ALTERED STATES SUMMIT
HOSTED BY THE WASSAIC PROJECT
DUTCHESS COUNTY, NY—On Sept 17, 2016, from 5-8pm, sandwich theorists, artists, activists, engineers, and politicos are gathering in the Hamlet of Wassaic for Dutchess County’s premiere sandwich multimedia symposium. This year’s theme of “Altered States” has inspired contentious and, frankly, mouthwatering presentations as the sandwich scene’s best and brightest grapple with the nature and shifting composition of the sandwichverse.
“This year’s theme has brought in a truly distinct lineup of presentations,” said Sandwich Club said Breanne Trammell, Secretary of the Sandwich Club and CoChair of the Summit Planning Committee.
The day’s presentations are diverse in their interrogation of the sandwich and its place in culture. Speakers will hold forth about what happens when sandwiches leave voicemails, the sandwiches of the future, the notion of a timebased sandwich, what happens when you turn a sandwich into a pizza, and, unprecedentedly, the sandwicheye view.
“The speakers, I would say, threaten to shatter the current conception of the sandwich,” said Shannon Finnegan, Sandwich Club CoFounder and CoChair of the Summit Planning Committee
There will also be several presentations that focus on artwork: speakers will present original artistic works and also make bold proclamations in the field of sandwich art criticism. A longtime member and Sandwich Club MVP will hold a fashion show centered around backpacks and bags for sandwiches; another presenter has prepared a PowerPoint music video & feelingsrap choreopoem presentation. A celebrated literary critic will deliver a talk entitled “Sandwiches: a Literary Survey,” while another duo will discuss the interlinguistic ontology of the sandwich.
The event will, of course, feature intensely practical sessions as well: “Aeronautical Sandwich Engineering” is an essential workshop for any sandwich maker, “The Sandwich Estimator” will introduce attendees to cuttingedge statistical methods, and “Opposites Attract” will break down the mystical bond between sandwiches and soups.
Noted sandwichsmith Jeff BarnettWinsby — who has literally decades of sandwichmaking experience — will serve up a variety of grilled cheeses to attendees.
“Altered States” will also feature an art exhibition entitled “The Sliced Bread Turn: Sandwiches and their Discontents”, and will include the release of volume 2 of The Upper Crust, the Sandwich Club’s annual publication.
