SENIOR PROM EARLY REGISTRATION

Though this year’s annual Dutchess County Senior Prom takes place October 17, all summer we’ve received calls and emails from eager prom-goers wanting to line up seats before the prom sells out. The prom will take place from noon until 4 p.m. at Villa Borghese, 70 Widmer Road in Wappingers Falls. Once again, The Pines at Poughkeepsie is co-hosting the prom along with the Office for the Aging. The theme this year will be “Denim and Diamonds,” so pair up your finest jewelry with your best western wear, dressy evening wear with cowboy boots, and whatever combination of blue jeans and bling works for you. Once again, the full five-piece Bob Martinson Band will provide the music for you to dance away the day.

Discounted early-bird registration is encouraged.  Tickets are available for $20 for those whose payment is received before September 23rdor whenever the event sells out, whichever comes first.  After September 23rd, admission increases to $30.  Those who wish to sit together (a table seats up to 10) should send their payment in together.  Please be sure to include the names of everyone you are paying for and send your check to:  Dutchess County Office for the Aging, 27 High Street, Poughkeepsie, NY  12601.

Additional sponsors for the Senior Prom include Wingate Healthcare, EverCare, Hudson Cadillac Buick GMC, Hamaspik Choice, Prime Health Choice, Zounds Hearing, Helping Other People Everywhere, Avalon Assisted Living and Wellness Center, TEG Federal Credit Union and Toll Brothers.

TWO NEW PRESCRIPTION DRUG DROP-OFF SPOTS

Those looking to safely dispose unneeded and/or outdated medicines can now do so at two new locations in eastern Dutchess:

  • Village of Millerton Police Department, 21 Dutchess Ave. – open 9 a.m. – 4 p.m. Monday through Friday, Saturday noon – midnight, andSunday 4 p.m. – midnight. Call 518-789-3115 for assistance;
  • Pawling substation, Dutchess County Sheriff’s Office, 9 Memorial Ave. (next to the village municipal building). Call 845-486-3800 for availability and assistance.

These join the seven other locations already available for 24/7 drug drop-offs: police department headquarters in Beacon, East Fishkill, Hyde Park, Town of Poughkeepsie, and Wappingers Falls, State Police Troop K headquarters on Route 44 in Salt Point, and the Dutchess County Sheriff’s Office headquarters on North Hamilton Street in the City of Poughkeepsie. Additionally, the Village of Red Hook Police Department accepts drug drop-offs every day from 8 a.m. until midnight.

Any unused prescription medications, medicated ointments, over-the-counter medicines, and inhalers may be disposed of at these locations. Hazardous materials and needles (sharps) are not accepted, and pharmacies and medical providers are not allowed to take part in the program.

OTHER AGING NEWS ONLINE:

You may recall a recent Aging News item in this space where Social Security announced that they were adding a cell-phone-based security step to their online-based operations. It has dawned on them in Washington that not everybody has cell phones, especially in parts of rural Dutchess, so they’re backpedaling: http://blog.socialsecurity.gov/update-to-new-online-security/

More senior citizens are re-entering the workforce, but a new Boston College study finds they’re increasingly being funneled into “old person” jobs – those being the study author’s words, not ours: http://www.nytimes.com/2016/08/18/upshot/as-more-older-people-seek-work-they-are-put-into-old-person-jobs.html?rref=collection%2Ftimestopic%2FElderly&_r=0

65 is the un-retirement age far as Phil Collins is concerned, although he’s not back to 100% drumming-wise. He’ll be performing next weekend at the US Open tennis championships in NYC: http://www.nytimes.com/2016/08/18/arts/music/phil-collins-memoir-singles-interview.html
