NEW MILFORD CT- Susan Steinberg Waldman, will exhibit an art show entitled “Portrait Retrospective” from July 31st to August 17th in The Silo Gallery at Hunt Hill Farm, 44 Upland Road, New Milford, CT.  The gallery is open to the public, free of charge, Wednesday through Saturday, 10 – 5 pm; Sunday 12 – 5 pm.

Susan, an art and special education teacher at Schagtichoke School, continually explores the many outlets for her artistic talents be that teaching art at The Silo’s youth camps to designing dinnerware and giftware for the likes of Mikasa, Pfaltzgraff and Dixie paper products.

In “Portrait Retrospective” Susan captures the expressions and souls of people she has encountered throughout her life; from family to colleagues and students. “Each person I paint has touched me in some way.  I aim to bring their character and that emotional connection – be it positive or negative –  to life in each portrait,” said Waldman..

The textured pieces are created with a mixture of earth, sticks, leaves, oil paint and wax which is applied with a palette knife. “Wax is a preservative and these paintings have lasted for years. Egyptians used wax for their Fayum mummy portraits, which were created during the Coptic period, 3rd-4th Century.” cites Steinberg Waldman.

Hunt Hill Farm is the former estate of Ruth and Skitch Henderson, founders of the New York Pops, operating now as a nonprofit organization whose mission is to cultivate love of land, food and the arts.  Home to the renowned Silo Cooking School, the property is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.  The converted barns and stables are surrounded by hundreds of acres of open space, active farmlands, stonewalls and woodlands – a unique venue for weddings, showers, holiday parties and business meetings and retreats.
