Sherman Chamber Ensemble Presents “Sweet Diversions with Mozart”

August 12 and 13 at 8 pm

SCE Summer 2 Artists

The Sherman Chamber Ensemble’s 2016 Signature Summer Concert Series continues on August 12 at St. Andrew’s Church in Kent and August 13 at the Lake Mauweehoo Club in Sherman with “Sweet Diversions with Mozart” – a program featuring oboist Gerard Reuter.  Works include Phantasy Quartet, Benjamin Britten; Chamber Concerto for Flute, Oboe and Cello, Antonio Vivaldi; Duo for Oboe and Flute, Robert Muczynski; and Divertimento in E flat Major for String Trio, K. 563, W.A. Mozart.  In addition to Reuter, featured musicians are Susan Rotholz, flute; Doori Na, violin; Michael Roth, viola; and Artistic Director Eliot Bailen, cello.

Sherman Chamber Ensemble concerts are performed Friday evenings in the intimate and acoustically excellent St. Andrew’s Church on Main Street in Kent, CT. Saturday evening performances take place amid the rustic charm of the lakeside Mauweehoo Clubhouse on Leach Hollow Road in Sherman, CT. All performances start at 8 p.m. and are followed by a reception offering light refreshments and an opportunity to meet the performers.

“We are pleased to welcome the talented Gerard Reuter for this performance” said SCE Artistic Director Eliot Bailen. He began his oboe studies at the Juilliard School at the age of nine and continued there as a pupil of Lois Wann. He attended the Royal College of Music, studying with Terrence MacDonagh and Michael Winfield. Reuter is a favorite at summer music festivals such as Caramoor and Marlboro and has toured Europe and the United States with the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra. He has been principal oboist of American Ballet Theatre, An die Musik, Parnassus, and the New York Philomusica. As the recipient of the 1992 Pro Musicis International Award, Reuter was presented in solo recitals in New York, Boston, Washington D.C., Los Angeles, Rome, Hong Kong, and Paris.

General admission is $30 and $25 for students and seniors. And new this year, children 15 and under are free when accompanied by an adult purchasing admission ticket.  Reservations are strongly recommended and may be made by calling 860-355-5930.  Tickets may also be purchased online at www.shermanchamberensemble.org. The Sherman Chamber Ensemble was founded in 1983 to bring world-class live classical music performance to Western Connecticut and nearby New York State.  Its summer chamber music series has been described in The New York Times as “about as close as it gets to the Platonic ideal of a chamber music concert.” Additional events coming later this year include Labor Day weekend bluegrass jamborees; the annual “Live at the Lake” coffeehouse; and Thanksgiving weekend classical-jazz matinee performances.

Support for this season comes from the Connecticut Department of Economic and Community Development/Connecticut Office of the Arts, The Harcourt Foundation, Connecticut Community Foundation, private foundations, local businesses and many generous individual donors.
