ALEXANDRIA, VA — A Virginia man has pleaded guilty to federal firearms and explosives charges after authorities uncovered a massive stockpile of more than 150 pipe bombs in his possession, along with disturbing evidence that he had used a photo of President Joe Biden for target practice.
Brad Spafford, 36, entered a guilty plea on Friday in U.S. District Court, admitting to one count of possessing a firearm in violation of the National Firearms Act and one count of possessing an unregistered destructive device, according to court documents.
Investigation Triggered by Concerned Neighbor
The investigation into Spafford began in January 2023, when a neighbor—who was also a law enforcement officer—alerted the FBI to his suspicious behavior. That neighbor later became a confidential human source, helping federal agents gather critical evidence.
Prosecutors revealed that Spafford had made violent political statements, including supporting the idea of “bringing back political assassinations.” In addition, agents discovered that he had previously lost three fingers while attempting to construct explosive devices at home.
Disturbing Arsenal Discovered
When federal authorities raided Spafford’s property, they discovered an alarming cache of over 150 fully constructed pipe bombs. The devices were described as “ready for use” and posed a significant threat to public safety.
Among the evidence seized was a target practice setup using a printed photo of President Joe Biden, further raising concerns about Spafford’s intentions and potential for politically motivated violence.
Serious Federal Charges and Sentencing Ahead
Spafford now faces a possible lengthy prison sentence for his crimes. Although a specific sentencing date has not been announced, the charges carry severe penalties under federal law. Possessing unregistered destructive devices—such as pipe bombs—is a serious violation of the National Firearms Act, which tightly regulates the manufacture, transfer, and possession of such weapons.
Authorities Condemn Threat to Public and National Security
Federal prosecutors and law enforcement officials have condemned Spafford’s actions, describing the case as a stark reminder of the dangers posed by domestic extremism and illegal explosives.
While there is no indication that Spafford had finalized a plan for a specific attack, investigators noted that the volume and readiness of the explosives, combined with his violent rhetoric, made the threat credible and dangerous.
Case Highlights Ongoing Efforts to Prevent Domestic Terror Threats
Spafford’s arrest and guilty plea come amid increasing federal efforts to identify and disrupt potential threats tied to extremist ideologies, particularly those involving weapons and explosive devices.
The case also highlights the importance of community vigilance, as it was a concerned neighbor who first alerted authorities and helped prevent what could have become a catastrophic act of violence.
Spafford remains in federal custody as he awaits sentencing. The investigation continues as authorities examine any additional connections or motivations behind his dangerous stockpile.
