Cary Institute Presents a Forum for Undergraduate and Graduate Students

On Friday, July 8 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. join the Cary Institute for a forum designed for undergraduate and graduate students.
Hear firsthand how science is communicated to the public by scientists, educators, policymakers, activists, and lawyers, all experts in the field of environmental science.
 
The forum speakers are as follows: 
 
– Dr. Neil Bettez, New Paltz Town Supervisor
– Dr. Rebecca Benner, New York State Science Director, The Nature Conservancy
– Manna Jo Greene, Advocate/Activist, Environmental Director for Hudson River Sloop Clearwater
– Amanda Higgs, Fisheries Biologist, NYC Department of Environmental Conservation
– Abigail Jones, Environmental Lawyer, Riverkeeper
– Dr. Jeremy Kirchman, Curator of Birds, The New York State Museum
– Donna Light-Donovan, High School Science Teacher, Croton-Hudson
– Dr. Fred Lubnow, Environmental Consultant, Princeton Hydro
– Jennifer Rubbo, Manager for the Environmental Cooperative at the Vassar Barns, Vassar College
– Casey Tompkins, Manager of the Natural Resource Program, Orange and Rockland Utilities, Inc.
In the morning session (9:15 a.m. – 12:15 p.m.), speakers representing each field will share their insights about translating ecology for different audiences and purposes. They will discuss the major challenges and rewards of communicating the results of scientific studies, and share advice for students who are interested in different careers in translational ecology.
In the afternoon session (1:30 p.m. – 3:00 p.m.), speakers will join small groups for informal discussions about issues of concern to the student participants, including both translational ecology and ecology-related career pathways.
The Forum is open to all students at no charge. Interested individuals should register for the afternoon program to Aude Lochet, REU Program Coordinator atlocheta@caryinstitute.org or call (845) 677-7600 x 326. No registration is necessary for the morning session. Registration deadline for the afternoon session is July 1, 2016.
There will be a break from 12:30 p.m. – 1:30 p.m. Please bring your own lunch and beverage.
