Town of Washington Dog Enumeration Underway
The Town of Washington has started the process of a Dog Enumeration or Census. A letter and dog license application has been mailed to all property owners. We are requesting that all unlicensed dogs be registered by July 6th to avoid the enumeration fee of $25.00 and a court summons and fine. Beginning on July 7th, Dog Enumerators will be canvassing all properties to ensure compliance with New York State’s Legislation requiring all dogs be licensed in the Town in which they reside. The enumeration fee is to cover the Town’s expenses relating to the enumeration.
Why should I license my dog?
- To be a responsible resident and ensure you follow the laws set forth by New York State,
- A rabies vaccination is required to license your dog. NYS requires this for the health and safety of you, your family and your neighbors.
- A license enables us to identify your dog if it is lost or stolen.
Just this week, the Town has received phone calls concerning dog situations. They are as follows:
- Nuisance dog running loose in a neighborhood. The dog has entered several yards, and neighbors are concerned about children and other pets being attacked by the dog.
- An unlicensed dog killed the neighbors cat.
- An unlicensed dog from Millbrook attacked a dog at a municipal dog park in Beekman.
- Constant barking of dog is disturbing the peace in a neighborhood.
Other incidents:
- Dog running free chased and knocked down a jogger.
- Complaint of an unlicensed dog sitting each morning on Route 44. May cause accident.
- Unidentified dog rescued from roadside and brought to the SPCA by good Samaritan.
