WASHINGTON, D.C. — A months-long investigation into the tragic death of a 5-year-old boy in Northwest D.C. has led to a first-degree murder charge against the child’s father, Deandre Pettus, 33.
The incident dates back to October 6, 2023, when emergency crews were called to an apartment in the 4500 block of Connecticut Avenue NW for reports of an unconscious child. Members of the United States Secret Service were the first to arrive on the scene and immediately began CPR. D.C. Fire and EMS quickly took over life-saving efforts, but despite their best attempts, the child was pronounced dead at the scene.
The young victim was identified as 5-year-old Deandre Pettus, sharing the same name as his father. Authorities initially arrested the elder Pettus at the scene and charged him with First Degree Cruelty to Children.
Death Initially Ruled “Undetermined”
The day after the incident, the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner ruled the child’s cause of death as undetermined. However, the ruling did not mark the end of the investigation. Detectives from the Metropolitan Police Department’s Homicide Branch, working closely with the United States Attorney’s Office, continued to gather evidence and build a case.
Over the following months, the case was presented to a D.C. Grand Jury, which reviewed the evidence behind closed doors.
Grand Jury Returns Murder Indictment
On Friday, July 11, 2025, the Grand Jury issued a formal indictment charging Deandre Pettus with First Degree Murder–Felony Murder. He was arraigned the same day in D.C. Superior Court.
No further details about the boy’s injuries or the specific circumstances of his death were immediately released. The indictment suggests prosecutors believe the death occurred during the commission of another serious crime — a key element in felony murder charges.
Community Reaction and Ongoing Proceedings
The heartbreaking case has shaken the local community, especially given the victim’s young age and the serious nature of the charges against his own father.
If convicted, Pettus could face life in prison. He is currently being held in custody as legal proceedings continue.
Authorities have not stated whether additional evidence—such as autopsy results, witness statements, or forensic findings—were critical in elevating the initial charge to felony murder. The investigation was described as extensive and collaborative between multiple agencies.
