5 New Speed Cameras Installed Along I-84 in Dutchess and Orange Counties

HUDSON VALLEY, NY — Drivers traveling through Dutchess and Orange Counties should keep an eye on their speed—especially along I-84. The New York State Department of Transportation (NYSDOT) has activated five new automated speed enforcement cameras as part of its ongoing effort to reduce accidents and protect road crews in active work zones.

These cameras are part of a statewide initiative to crack down on speeding, particularly in areas where road workers are at higher risk.

What the Cameras Do

The newly installed radar-equipped devices automatically monitor vehicle speed and capture license plate information. If a vehicle is detected speeding, a ticket is issued to the registered owner and mailed directly—without any stop or interaction with law enforcement.

According to Governor Kathy Hochul, the program has already shown promise by encouraging safer driving behavior in work zones and lowering average travel speeds where implemented. However, the system remains controversial.

Criticism of the Program

Some residents and drivers argue that the cameras are “sneaky” and unfair, particularly because they penalize the vehicle owner, regardless of who was actually driving at the time of the violation. Since no driver is officially identified, these violations don’t carry points on a driver’s license—but they do come with significant fines.

Still, state officials defend the technology as a necessary safety measure to reduce speed-related crashes and protect both motorists and highway workers.

New Camera Locations Across the Hudson Valley

The five new speed enforcement cameras are spread across high-traffic areas of I-84 and Route 9W. Here’s where they’re now active:

Dutchess County

  1. I-84 Eastbound between Route 9D and Route 52 (Wappingers to Fishkill)

    • This stretch sees frequent construction and congestion, making it a priority for enforcement.

  2. I-84 Eastbound between the Taconic State Parkway and Luddingtonville Road

    • Another busy segment with heavy commuter traffic, particularly during rush hours.

Orange County

  1. I-84 near Exit 28 (Maybrook) – Eastbound and Westbound Lanes

    • This location captures speeders in both directions of traffic.

  2. I-84 Westbound between Route 17M in Goshen and Mountain Road

    • A critical stretch where speed enforcement is now underway.

  3. Route 9W between Route 218 and Angola Road

    • Outside of I-84, this heavily traveled route in the Hudson Valley is also under surveillance.

A Statewide Trend

These Hudson Valley installations are part of a larger statewide rollout of automated enforcement in work zones, an initiative supported by state legislation that aims to reduce fatalities and serious injuries.

Although the debate continues, one thing is clear—drivers in Dutchess and Orange Counties should expect more automated monitoring and less margin for error when it comes to speeding.
