MILLERTON, NY—The Moviehouse in Millerton has been steadily increasing its Arts programming over the course of the last two years and now is adding even more enrichment for its audiences. Their Arts calendar this month features three not-to-be-missed live appearances and Q&As designed to to broaden and enhance the film-going experience.
The first of these events will take place on Sunday, April 17 at 1:00 p.m., when acclaimed British documentary filmmaker Phil Grabsky will join audiences LIVE via Skype to discuss his most recent endeavor in which he and his production team followed concert pianist Leif Ove Andsnes to create the film Concerto: A Beethoven Journey.
The film, which also features the Mahler Chamber Orchestra, Gustavo Dudamel and the LA Philharmonic, chronicles Andses’ attempt to understand and interpret one of the greatest sets of works for piano ever written: Beethoven’s five piano concertos. Concertofeatures virtuoso and breathtaking classical performances which are given center stage throughout the film. CONCERTO will only be screened once. (Tickets are $13 for Members and $16 for Non-Members).
On Friday, April 22 at 7:00 p.m. after a screening of the film The First Monday in May, former Chief of Design of the Metropolitan Museum Jeff Daly will share behind the scenes stories about his many years working on the Met’s annual special exhibit which has always kicked off with a “party of the year” – The Met Gala. He will reflect on the film, share stories and anecdotes about his experiences, and entertain questions from the audience.
The First Monday in May is directed by Andrew Rossi and features, among others, Andrew Bolton, John Galliano, and Jean-Paul Gaultier. The film follows the creation of The Metropolitan Museum of Art’s most attended fashion exhibition in history, “China: Through The Looking Glass,” an exploration of Chinese-inspired Western fashions by Costume Institute curator Andrew Bolton. With unprecedented behind-the-scenes access, Rossi captures the collision of high fashion and celebrity at the Met Gala, one of the biggest global fashion events chaired every year by Vogue editor in chief Anna Wintour. (Tickets: $7-$11).
“…over my 30 years as head of design at the Met I worked on many of the special blockbuster costume exhibits for Diana Vreeland and the curators and with socialite Pat Buckey, and then Harold Koda and Andrew Bolton and, of course, Anna Wintour. It was a lot of fun and a lot of angst but I loved it.” says Jeff Daly.
Closing out the month on Saturday, April 30 at 4:00 p.m., Associate Professor of Political Studies and Human Rights, and Academic Director, Hannah Arendt Center for Politics and the Humanities, Bard College – Roger Berkowitz – will address audiences after a screening of Vita Activa: The Spirit of Hannah Arendt, Director Ada Ushpiz’ brand new documentary about one of the most influential thinkers of the 20th century. Berkowitz will discuss the film and the continuation of Arendt’s vital legacy through the Center and entertain questions. He will then introduce the regular 7pm screening. (Tickets: Child $7, Senior/Matinee $9).
