Movie goer arrested for leaving dogs in hot vehicle

Red Hook, New York – On March 12, 2016, New York State Police from the Rhinebeck barracks arrested a 70-year-old Mt. Tremper man for the Violation of Confinement of a Companion Animal in a Vehicle under Extreme Temperatures.

Troopers were dispatched by Dutchess County 911 to the Lyceum Cinemas for a report of two dogs left in an unoccupied parked vehicle.   Troopers arrived on the scene and observed that the dogs, a husky and a bull-Mastiff, were lethargic and drooling.  The Trooper was hesitant to break the vehicles window due to one of the dogs acting aggressively.  The Town of Red Hook Animal Control Officer responded to the scene to assist with the investigation.

Shortly after animal control was contacted, the dogs’ owner exited the cinema and removed the animals from the hot car which was parked in full sun.  It was discovered that the dogs were in the vehicle for approximately 3 hours without water.  After the dogs were removed from the vehicle and given water, their condition had visibly improved.

The owner was issued an Appearance Ticket under the Agriculture and Markets Law directing him to appear before the Town of Red Hook Court on March 24, 2016 at 6:00 p.m.
