PRESS RELEASE

The New York State Police at Montgomery announce the arrest of a Newburgh man for fleeing from the police in a stolen vehicle.  Michael A. Nunez, age 30, of Newburgh, was arrested on Saturday, March 12th and charged with one count of Criminal Possession of Stolen Property in the Third Degree, a felony, one count of Unlawfully Fleeing a Police Officer in a Motor Vehicle in the Third Degree, a misdemeanor and one count of Aggravated Unlicensed Operation of a Motor Vehicle in the Second Degree, a misdemeanor.

On March 12th, 2016 at approximately 1:04 PM Uniform Troopers observed a vehicle on Interstate 84 which had been reported stolen by the City of Port Jervis Police Department approximately 20 minutes earlier.  The vehicle exited the highway onto State Route 747 in the Town of New Windsor.  When the Trooper activated his emergency lights and siren the operator did not comply and ran a red light at the intersection of State Route 207 where he was struck by a tractor trailer traveling on State Route 207.  The operator was taken to St. Luke’s Hospital where he was treated for minor injuries and released.

The investigation, conducted by the Bureau of Criminal Investigation in conjunction with the City of Port Jervis Police Department, revealed that the victim had left his vehicle with the doors open and keys in the ignition while filling a propane tank at East Way Beverage in Port Jervis when Nunez entered the vehicle and drove away.  Nunez’s driving privilege was also revoked at the time of his arrest.  Nunez was arraigned at Town of New Windsor Court by Judge Calderon where he was remanded to OCJ in lieu of $5000 bail.
