COLLEGE PARK, Md. — What began as a routine overnight stay for a North Carolina truck driver turned into an unforgettable detour to good fortune. Clayton Webb, a long-haul trucker and part-time lawn warrior, found himself $50,000 richer after a lucky purchase at a Wawa convenience store in College Park, Maryland.
A Routine Delivery Turns Lucky
Webb, who regularly delivers across nine states, had just completed a delivery in Silver Spring on July 1. With a night to spend in College Park, he checked into a local motel and later walked to the Wawa at 10050 Baltimore Avenue to grab a snack and try his luck.
“I play the Lottery when I travel—it’s just something I enjoy doing now and then,” said Webb. That evening, he inserted $5 into a Lottery vending machine and selected the FAST PLAY “Double Win” game.
After scratching and reviewing the ticket, the numbers were clear: he had just won $50,000.
“I looked at it and said, ‘No way.’ Then I looked again,” Webb recalled with a smile. “I folded it and put it in my pocket. No need to play any more after that.”
A History of Modest Wins
Though he’s no stranger to Lottery luck, this was by far his biggest payday. Webb had previously won $5,000 from a North Carolina ticket and $1,000 from the Tennessee Lottery during his trucking travels. But nothing came close to this life-enhancing win in Maryland.
Asked which state has the best Lottery now, Webb didn’t hesitate:
“Well, that’s a no-brainer. Maryland!”
The Perfect Timing
The windfall couldn’t have come at a better time. Back home in North Carolina, Webb’s lawn mower engine recently blew out, and replacing it is no small expense—especially considering he mows a sprawling 52-acre property.
“When I’m not driving a truck, I’m on my tractor,” he explained. The prize money will go a long way toward replacing his heavy-duty mower and taking the pressure off his budget.
A Brief Pause, Then Back to the Road
Webb didn’t linger long in the spotlight. On the morning of July 2, just a day after his lucky purchase, he visited Maryland Lottery headquarters in Baltimore to claim his prize. Then it was right back to business.
“I had nine hours of driving ahead of me,” he said, referencing his trip back to North Carolina. “No time to celebrate too much. Gotta keep moving.”
A Little Luck, Shared
Webb’s win didn’t just benefit him. The Wawa location where he bought the winning ticket also receives a $500 bonus from the Maryland Lottery for selling a top-tier prize.
As for Webb, he plans to keep playing Lottery games modestly during his travels.
“I play a little bit. I don’t overdo it,” he said. “But it’s fun. And you never know.”
More Wins Still Out There
The FAST PLAY Double Win game remains active, with 13 top prizes of $50,000 still unclaimed, along with tens of thousands of smaller prizes ranging from $5 to $5,000.
So whether you’re a local or just passing through like Clayton Webb, that next trip to the convenience store might just be more than a pit stop—it could be a payday.
