KINGSTON, NY — For the fourth time in just eight months, the Kingston Police Department is investigating a shooting at a low-income housing complex in the city. The latest incident occurred Monday evening, July 1, at the Rondout Gardens Apartment Complex, raising ongoing concerns about violence and safety in public housing neighborhoods.
Gunshots Erupt During Domestic Dispute Call
According to a statement released by police, officers were dispatched to Rondout Gardens around 6:54 p.m. in response to a domestic dispute. Before officers arrived, shots were fired at the scene. Fortunately, no injuries have been reported at this time, but authorities say the investigation remains active. No suspects or further details were disclosed.
A Pattern of Violence in Kingston Housing Authority Properties
The Rondout Gardens shooting marks the fourth time in recent months that gunfire has erupted in public housing complexes overseen by the Kingston Housing Authority, which manages several hundred low-income units across the city.
-
In December 2023, a man was arrested after allegedly firing shots at a residence and a vehicle at the Leonard and Vera Van Dyke Apartments, located near Rondout Gardens.
-
In May 2024, another suspect was taken into custody, also connected to gunfire at the same Van Dyke complex.
-
On March 25, police responded to a shooting at the Wiltwyck Gardens Housing Complex, where a man was arrested for allegedly injuring a victim.
These repeated incidents have drawn increasing concern from local residents, city officials, and community organizations who are calling for greater security, police presence, and support services in Kingston’s public housing neighborhoods.
Police Remain Tight-Lipped
As of now, Kingston Police have not confirmed whether the most recent incident is connected to previous shootings. They emphasized that the case is under investigation and declined to release further details.
The ongoing pattern of gun violence in these communities highlights a growing issue of public safety in areas already burdened by economic hardship and limited resources.
Community Demands Action
With multiple shootings in under a year, residents and local leaders are urging city officials and the Kingston Housing Authority to implement stronger security measures, such as surveillance cameras, increased patrols, and intervention programs to reduce violence.
As the city seeks to address this troubling trend, the focus remains on improving safety for the hundreds of families living in these housing complexes—families who deserve to feel secure in their homes.
Anyone with information related to the recent shooting is urged to contact the Kingston Police Department.
