A high-speed police chase through Red Hook, New York, ended dramatically Sunday night when a teenager on an illegal dirt bike crashed near a local ice cream stand after evading officers.
Growing Dirt Bike Problem in the Hudson Valley
Authorities across the Hudson Valley have reported a surge in dangerous and illegal dirt bike activity over the past year. Unregistered bikes, often operated by young riders, have been causing havoc on local roads. Last fall, a particularly alarming incident occurred in the Village of Wappingers Falls when a group of bikers surrounded state troopers attempting to help a fallen rider.
These unauthorized riders have been known to perform stunts, speed through traffic, and intimidate drivers, placing both themselves and others in danger. Despite multiple accidents—some fatal—the trend shows no sign of slowing.
Police Pursuit in Red Hook
Red Hook Police say they’ve been fielding several complaints from residents about reckless dirt bike riders. Many report seeing the bikes racing through town, weaving through traffic, and even playing dangerous games of “chicken” with oncoming vehicles along Route 9.
On Sunday evening, just before 8 p.m., officers spotted an unregistered dirt bike on Linden Avenue. When a patrol officer tried to stop the vehicle, the rider refused to comply and sped off. A second officer encountered the rider shortly after, but the biker again evaded capture, heading south on Route 9.
Crash at Holy Cow Ice Cream Stand
According to officials, the teen rode at excessive speeds—at times using sidewalks—before attempting to cut through the parking lot of the popular Holy Cow ice cream stand. It was there the rider lost control and crashed the bike, bringing the chase to an end.
Police quickly apprehended the 18-year-old, whose name has not been released. The dirt bike was impounded, and the rider was issued multiple tickets, including Reckless Driving and Unlawful Fleeing a Police Officer.
Court Appearance Pending
The teen was released following the incident and is scheduled to appear in court at a later date. Police continue to warn the public about the dangers of operating illegal vehicles and are urging residents to report any sightings of unregistered dirt bikes or unsafe driving behavior.
As summer heats up, local law enforcement says it will remain vigilant in curbing the rise of rogue riders on Hudson Valley roads.
