While the spotlight of WorldPride beamed brightly over Washington, D.C., just two and a half hours south, Richmond, Virginia was making its own vibrant statement. Over five jam-packed days at the end of May, Virginia’s capital city proved it’s more than just a stop on the map—it’s a rising star in LGBTQ+ travel, brimming with diversity, warmth, and community spirit.
A Rainy Start, A Warm Welcome
The trip began with a dramatic downpour, but not even torrential rain could dampen the spirit of Richmond. My arrival was marked by a kind driver shielding me from the weather with a wide black umbrella. Originally headed to the artsy Quirk Hotel, I had to make a last-minute switch due to a boil water advisory affecting parts of the city. Thankfully, the Delta Hotel, a chic Marriott property downtown, was operating without issue.
Though my room wasn’t ready when I arrived, the staff was welcoming and helpful. I found solace on the second-floor bar, sipping a glass of prosecco while catching up on emails. Soon enough, I was able to settle into my room, refresh, and prepare for the days ahead.
Fast Friends and Fierce Community
Back in the lobby, I found myself early—per usual—and soon met Julia Randall, a lesbian travel influencer known as staysandgetaways. It wasn’t long before we were joined by Alysse Dalessandro, the force behind readytostare, a brand known for championing queer-inclusive and plus-size travel experiences. Our trio clicked instantly, bonding over our shared mission to spotlight affirming, inclusive destinations.
We weren’t alone for long. Another travel creator, joined by someone who appeared to be his boyfriend, rounded out our group. Their chemistry was undeniable, even if the details of their connection were fuzzy at first. In a twist that added a touch of signature queer drama to the trip, we later learned the pair had only just met in person that week. Despite their adorable PDA early on, the couple abruptly exited the trip after the first day, leaving the rest of us wondering—and gossiping—a little. As they say, no LGBTQ+ travel story is complete without at least one unexpected plot twist.
Richmond’s Pride Is Year-Round
Beyond the interpersonal stories and spirited gatherings, Richmond itself shined as the true star. The city’s commitment to LGBTQ+ inclusion isn’t confined to a single weekend or rainbow-colored banner. Pride in Richmond is woven into the culture, visible in local businesses, community centers, and the warm welcome extended by locals.
From charming art galleries and queer-owned cafés to public installations celebrating diversity, Richmond makes it clear that its embrace of the LGBTQ+ community isn’t performative—it’s genuine and sustained.
A Southern Surprise with Staying Power
Often overlooked in favor of larger Southern cities, Richmond is redefining what it means to be a queer-friendly destination below the Mason-Dixon Line. It offers a refreshing blend of Southern charm and progressive values, with spaces that welcome all identities and bodies, whether you’re visiting for Pride or any other time of year.
As more travelers seek destinations that offer both safety and celebration, Richmond is quietly, confidently rising to the top of the list—a city where LGBTQ+ visitors can feel seen, celebrated, and at home.
Whether you’re a solo adventurer, a couple exploring new places, or a group of friends chasing connection, Richmond promises an experience that’s both affirming and unforgettable.
