EXERCISE IS THE ANTI-AGING MIRACLE DRUG

You may have read in the news this past week about University of Sydney researchers who have identified over 1,000 molecular changes in the body that happen during exercise.   They feel their research may lead to the development of an “exercise pill” that would mimic the benefits of physical exercise and help people who are incapacitated reap the undeniable health benefits.  According to one of the researchers, Dr. David James, “Exercise is the most powerful therapy for many human diseases, including type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease and neurological disorders.”

Besides the ability to delay the diseases of aging, exercise is also the most important thing an older adult can do to live independently longer.  So why don’t more people exercise?  According to personal trainer and Poughkeepsie Journal exercise columnist Mike Polito, “The best exercise anyone can do is the one they will actually do.”   In other words, find an exercise you enjoy, and you are more likely to stick to it than one you dread performing.

You can learn more about the importance of exercise at the Office for the Aging’s morning of Senior Seminars on Thursday, November 5th at the New Hackensack Reformed Church, 1580 Route 376 in Wappinger.  If you’re having trouble getting started with an exercise program, Mike Polito will be presenting a talk on “Exercise Motivation” at 9:30 a.m.  Then stick around try out two of the most popular exercises for seniors.  Laura Teller from the American Studio of Martial Arts will present a seminar on “Tai Chi,” focusing on slow movements for strength, flexibility and balance at 10:30 a.m.  She will follow it at11:30 a.m. with a session of “Qi Gong,” another popular Chinese exercise combining easy motion and breath control.  To register for any of the seminars, call (845) 486-2555.

FREE BAGELS ON THE WALKWAY

Need a little incentive to start exercising?  The Pines at Poughkeepsie are planning a special treat for seniors who join the Office for the Aging’s Senior Walking Group on the Walkway Over the Hudson this Tuesday morning, October 20th for a fall foliage walk.  The colors should be in full force, and the Pines at Poughkeepsie will be providing free bagels and coffee beginning at 8:30 a.m.  Walkers will kick off their walk around 9:00 a.m.  There is no need to register, just show up and enjoy the free treats and the beautiful scenery while you exercise your heart.   There is also a Senior Walking Group that meets everyFriday morning at 9 a.m. near the Dutchess Rail Trail entrance behind Gold’s Gym in LaGrange.

SENIOR EXERCISE PROGRAM

Finally, the Office for the Aging offers a Senior Exercise Program at almost 50 locations around the county.  The groups meet for about an hour twice a week to perform weight-bearing exercises that will help improve your strength and balance.  For more information about the program, visit the Office for the Aging website at: www.co.dutchess.ny.us/CountyGov/Departments/Aging/6727.htm.  If you do not have Internet access, call our office at (845) 486-2555 and we will get the information to you.

MEDICARE SCAMS

Open enrollment for Medicare has begun and lasts until December 7.  Open enrollment is a prime opportunity for Medicare scammers to take advantage of older adults. We encourage you to read the U.S. News article,  How to Protect Yourself Against Common Medicare Scams. The article discusses five common Medicare scams and offers suggestions from professionals in the field on how to avoid them.

Some important things to keep in mind to avoid scams include:

  • Guard your Medicare number. Don’t give it to anyone you don’t know for certain is part of your health care team
  • Medicare will never call or email you with product offers.
  • An insurance agent is not allowed to visit your home to sell or endorse any Medicare product.
