A quiet neighborhood in Orange County was shaken Tuesday evening after a powerful explosion injured a 12-year-old boy, prompting an emergency airlift and a police investigation.
Explosion Rocks Middletown Neighborhood
The incident occurred around 5 p.m. near Emma and Ashley Avenues in the City of Middletown, New York. Witnesses described hearing a deafening blast—louder than a typical gunshot—just before emergency responders arrived on the scene.
According to Mark Lieb of Rockland Video, who was at the scene, several exploded fireworks were discovered in the area following the incident. Residents and neighbors expressed concern, with many unaware that fireworks were even being set off in the vicinity.
Child Suffers Severe Injuries
Police confirmed that a 12-year-old boy had been seriously injured after a firework exploded in his hand. The force of the blast caused severe trauma, and while official medical updates have not been released, unconfirmed reports suggest the child may have lost several fingers due to the explosion.
Following the incident, the boy was airlifted from Monhagen Middle School, located about a mile from where the explosion took place. He was transported to a hospital for urgent treatment. Authorities have not yet disclosed his identity or condition, citing the ongoing investigation and privacy concerns.
Investigation Underway
The City of Middletown Police Department is now investigating the incident. Officials have not yet determined whether the fireworks were legal or how the boy came into possession of them.
Authorities are urging anyone with information or who may have witnessed the explosion to contact the Middletown Police Department immediately. The goal is to better understand the circumstances leading up to the incident and prevent similar accidents in the future.

Keep a safe distance and always follow manufacturer instructions
-
Have water or a fire extinguisher nearby
