LANGUAGE LINE

Speaking a foreign language can often be a burden for an elderly resident who is looking for assistance.  At the Dutchess County Office for the Aging, we use a service called Language Line to ensure we can properly assist non-English-speaking and limited-English-speaking seniors, caregivers and others.  Language Line offers translators in over 40 different languages.

When someone who speaks a foreign language calls or stops by our office, we ask him or her to please let us know what language they feel most comfortable speaking.  We then set up a conference call with an interpreter who can translate the conversation for both parties.  All conversations are held in the strictest confidence.

Non-English-speaking residents may also find assistance through our website which can be translated into 80 different languages.  On the top right side of any page, you will find a button that says “Select Language.”  A menu will be displayed from which you can pick the language of your choice.  All text on the page will then automatically be translated into the selected language.  Please help us spread the word about these two helpful services to any non-English speaking residents or groups you may associate with.

SENIOR PROM EARLY REGISTRATION

Mark your calendar and save the date for the 20th annual Dutchess County Senior Prom to be held on Monday, October 19th from 12 noon – 4 PM at the Villa Borghese in Wappinger.  The Prom is once again co-hosted by the Pines at Poughkeepsie.  The theme this year is going back to the original idea of emulating a school prom.  Attendees are encouraged to “dress to impress” by wearing their most elegant attire.  The five piece Bob Martinson Band will provide the entertainment.

In addition to our co-host, sponsors for this year’s Senior Prom include TEG Federal Credit Union, Wingate Healthcare, CDPHP, Hamaspik Choice, Hudson Cadillac Buick GMC, Prime Health Choice, Toll Brothers Elant Choice, and Zounds Hearing.

Discounted early-bird registration is encouraged, as the Senior Prom is a sell-out every year.  Tickets are available for $20 for those whose payment is received before September 20th (or when we sell out).  After Sept. 20, the charge is $30.  Those who wish to sit together (up to 10 at a table) should send their payment in together.  Please be sure to include the names of everyone you are paying for and send your check to:  Dutchess County Office for the Aging, 27 High Street, Poughkeepsie, NY  12601

Grupo Folclorico Dances at Boardman!
Grupo Folclorico presents a special dance performance at the Boardman Road Branch Library on Monday, July 13, at 7 pm. Grupo Folclorico de Poughkeepsie is a dedicated group of dancers who perform regionally in beautiful traditional costumes with the goal of introducing audiences to cultural Mexican dances. The library event provides an intimate encounter with the dancers in costumes and a preview of Poughkeepsie’s annual Guelaguetza festival in August. Grupo Folclorico explains the history behind the dances they perform and as well as the history of La Guelaguetza in Oaxaca, Mexico.

This program has been made possible by Latino Americans: 500 Years of History, a grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities and the American Library Association. Boardman Branch Library is at 141 Boardman Road in the Town of Poughkeepsie.  For general library information see www.poklib.org or call845-485-3445 x 3702.

NY HEALTH OFFICIALS WEST NILE WARNING

By: Associated Press

Public health officials in New York state are reminding residents of the dangers posed by mosquitoes after West Nile Virus was found in two counties.

The New York State Department of Health says members of the public can protect themselves by eliminating standing water in their yards. Used tires, pots, clogged gutters, pools and outdoor recycling containers can all serve as mosquito breeding areas. In addition, residents should also use repellants and avoid outdoor activities when mosquitoes are most active.

West Nile Virus has been found in mosquitoes trapped this year in Rockland and Suffolk counties. It’s the first time this year the disease has been identified in the state. Another mosquito-borne illness, Eastern Equine Encephalitis, has not been found in the state so far this year.
